Underfloor heating is more than pipework beneath a floor
Good performance depends on correct design, water temperatures, pipe spacing, floor build-up, insulation, flow rates, zoning and controls. A problem in one part of the system can appear somewhere else—for example, a cold room may be caused by an actuator, thermostat, pump, airlock, balancing issue or heat-source setting.
For new systems, we consider the property and intended floor finishes before installation. For existing systems, we diagnose rather than assuming the manifold or thermostat is automatically at fault.

Many repair enquiries involve systems with limited paperwork, unfamiliar components or an installer who is no longer available. That does not automatically prevent diagnosis.

Design around the property—not just the number of rooms
Heat loss, insulation, floor construction, available depth, proposed coverings and the chosen heat source all influence a suitable design. The layout must also allow sensible control of different areas.
Early involvement is valuable because finished floor levels, screed, insulation and manifold location can be difficult or expensive to change later. We can coordinate relevant heating, controls and associated works where agreed in the quotation.

Frequently asked questions
Does Bumfords work on electric underfloor heating?
No. Bumfords installs and repairs wet, water-based underfloor-heating systems only. We do not install, diagnose or repair electric UFH.
Can you repair underfloor heating installed by somebody else?
Often, yes. Send photographs of the manifold, thermostats and controls along with the symptoms and any available system information. We will assess whether the enquiry is suitable before arranging a visit.
Why is one room or zone not heating?
Possible causes include thermostat or wiring faults, actuators, flow settings, air, circulation, balancing, a pump issue or a wider heat-source problem. Proper diagnosis is preferable to replacing components by assumption.
Can wet UFH be installed in an existing home?
It may be possible in renovations and extensions, but available floor depth, insulation, floor build-up, heat loss, access and proposed finishes must be assessed. Not every retrofit method suits every property.
Can underfloor heating work with a boiler or heat pump?
Wet UFH can be designed around suitable heat sources, but water temperatures, controls, hydraulics and heat-loss requirements must work together. The system should be assessed as a whole.
Do you repair manifolds and controls?
We investigate suitable wet-UFH manifold, pump, actuator, thermostat, wiring-centre, zoning and flow problems. Parts and repairs are quoted according to the findings.
Does a cold system always need powerflushing?
No. Poor performance can have several causes. Cleaning may be appropriate where system condition supports it, but it should not replace diagnosis of controls, circulation, balancing or component faults.
