Gas or carbon-monoxide emergency? If you smell gas or suspect carbon monoxide, move into fresh air and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. Do not use the website enquiry route for a gas emergency. LPG customers should contact their LPG supplier’s emergency service where appropriate.
Diagnosis before assumption

A boiler symptom can have more than one cause

No heating, intermittent hot water or an error code does not necessarily mean the boiler itself has failed.

Controls, pumps, motorised valves, pressure, circulation, electrical supplies and other heating-system components can produce similar symptoms. Replacing parts without confirming the cause can waste time and money.

Our engineer assesses the appliance and relevant connected components before recommending a repair. Where the condition, age or parts availability makes further repair questionable, we explain the options clearly.

Appointments are subject to availability. Bumfords does not advertise a 24-hour emergency or guaranteed same-day boiler-repair service.
Faults we investigate

Boiler and connected heating-system repairs

01 — LOCKOUTS

Error codes and recurring resets

Diagnosis of recurring lockouts, warning symbols and manufacturer error codes rather than simply clearing the display and waiting for the fault to return.

02 — HEAT AND HOT WATER

No heating or no hot water

Investigation where one service works but the other does not, or where temperatures and delivery have become inconsistent.

03 — PRESSURE

Repeated pressure loss or increase

Checks where pressure repeatedly falls or rises, including consideration of leaks and relevant boiler or heating-system components.

04 — CIRCULATION

Pumps, valves and water flow

Fault finding where heat is not moving correctly around radiators, hot-water cylinders or separate zones.

05 — CONTROLS

Thermostats and programmers

Controls, receivers, wiring symptoms and calls for heat considered alongside the boiler and wider system.

06 — LEAKS AND NOISE

Visible water or unusual sounds

Investigation of suitable boiler and heating-component leaks, vibration, kettling or other unusual noises.

A website cannot safely diagnose a boiler. These examples help us route your enquiry. The actual cause must be established through appropriate checks by a suitably qualified engineer.

How a repair enquiry works

From symptoms to a sensible next step

01 — DESCRIBE

Send the details

Provide the make, model, fuel, error code, symptoms, postcode and useful photographs.

02 — REVIEW

We assess the enquiry

The office considers coverage, suitability, availability and the appropriate engineer.

03 — DIAGNOSE

Engineer attendance

The chargeable diagnostic visit is used to establish the cause rather than relying only on the symptom.

04 — EXPLAIN

Repair or clear advice

We explain the fault and any parts, further work or replacement option that deserves consideration.

Initial attendance

The diagnostic visit is chargeable

A repair appointment begins with diagnosis—not an assumption about which component needs replacing.

The initial attendance and diagnostic work are chargeable. The applicable charge will be explained when the appointment is arranged, so you can decide whether to proceed before an engineer attends.

What happens after diagnosis?

Where an appropriate repair can be completed within the agreed scope, the engineer will explain the position. If additional parts, labour or a return visit are required, these will be discussed separately.

Diagnostic attendance does not guarantee that the repair can be completed on the first visit. Parts, access, boiler condition and specialist requirements can affect the next step.

Older and unfamiliar systems

Repair where sensible—consider replacement when the evidence supports it

An older boiler does not automatically need replacing. Equally, repeated expensive failures or obsolete components can make continued repair poor value.

We consider the immediate fault alongside safety, reliability history, boiler condition, efficiency, parts availability and the wider heating system.

Repair may make sense

When continued repair is proportionate

  • The fault can be identified
  • Appropriate parts remain available
  • The boiler is otherwise serviceable
  • There is no pattern of major recurring failures
  • The likely cost is reasonable for the appliance
Replacement may deserve discussion

When further repair may offer poor value

  • Breakdowns have become frequent
  • Critical components are obsolete or unavailable
  • Repair cost is disproportionate to condition
  • Other major defects are likely to remain
  • Wider heating alterations are already planned

Boiler-repair questions

Useful answers before you enquire

Do you repair gas, LPG and oil boilers?

Yes. Please provide the fuel type, make, model, age and symptoms so the enquiry can be routed to an appropriately qualified engineer.

Do you repair boilers installed by another company?

Yes. Suitable boilers installed by other companies can be considered. Acceptance depends on the appliance, condition, location, fault, parts and availability.

Is there a diagnostic or call-out charge?

Yes. The initial diagnostic attendance is chargeable. The charge will be explained when the appointment is arranged. Parts and additional work may be separate.

Can you diagnose the boiler from an error code?

An error code is useful but does not always identify the underlying cause by itself. Proper diagnosis may still require checks by an engineer.

Why does my boiler pressure keep dropping?

Possible causes include water loss or a fault affecting a boiler or heating component. Repeated topping-up without identifying the cause is not a long-term solution.

Can an older boiler still be repaired?

Often, but it depends on the fault, safety, condition, repair history and parts availability. Age alone does not prove that replacement is necessary.

Do you offer emergency boiler repairs?

Bumfords does not advertise a 24-hour emergency or guaranteed same-day service. Appointments are subject to suitability, location and availability.

Is a boiler repair the same as a boiler service?

No. Servicing is planned maintenance and condition checking. A repair responds to a specific fault and begins with diagnostic work.

Which areas do you cover?

Our core area is South Yorkshire, including Sheffield, Barnsley, Rotherham, Doncaster and surrounding communities. Selected nearby work may be considered.
