Hot water stored, delivered and protected properly
Bumfords installs, replaces, repairs and services vented and unvented hot-water cylinders across Sheffield, Barnsley, Rotherham, Doncaster and surrounding areas. Cylinder selection begins with the property and its hot-water requirements.
The right cylinder depends on more than its physical size
A hot-water cylinder must suit the number of occupants, bathrooms, outlets, simultaneous demand, available space and the heat source serving the property.
For an unvented system, incoming mains-water pressure and flow, discharge arrangements and installation location must also be considered. A larger cylinder does not automatically provide better performance if the incoming supply or connected system is unsuitable.
Bumfords assesses the complete requirement before recommending installation, replacement, repair, conversion or servicing.

Vented and unvented hot-water cylinders
Vented cylinders
A traditional vented cylinder is normally supplied from a cold-water storage cistern, often positioned in a loft or at a higher level within the property.
Vented systems can remain entirely appropriate where the property, existing plumbing and customer requirements suit this arrangement.
- Usually supplied from stored cold water
- Performance affected by available head
- Can suit existing traditional systems
- Replacement sizing still requires assessment
Unvented cylinders
An unvented cylinder is supplied directly from the incoming mains and can provide strong hot-water performance to suitable outlets without a traditional cold-water storage tank.
Suitability depends on mains flow and pressure, discharge arrangements, property demand, available space and the connected heating system.
- Supplied from the incoming mains
- Can support multiple suitable outlets
- Requires appropriate safety controls
- Must be installed and serviced correctly
Converting from tank-fed to mains-pressure hot water
Removing an older storage cistern and installing an unvented cylinder can improve hot-water delivery in a suitable property—but it is not automatically the correct solution for every building.
We assess the incoming water supply, number of bathrooms, expected simultaneous demand, pipework, cylinder location, heat source and required discharge route before recommending a conversion.
Some properties may require additional alterations or may be better served by retaining or improving the existing arrangement. The recommendation is based on the complete system rather than on the cylinder alone.
Unvented-cylinder servicing
Regular servicing helps check the condition and operation of the cylinder and its relevant safety and control components in accordance with the system and manufacturer requirements.

Useful answers before you enquire
Do you install both vented and unvented cylinders?
Yes. Bumfords installs and replaces suitable vented and unvented hot-water cylinders following assessment of the property, demand and connected system.
Can you convert my tank-fed system to an unvented cylinder?
Yes, where the property is suitable. Incoming mains pressure and flow, discharge arrangements, pipework, space, heat source and hot-water demand must be assessed.
How much is an unvented-cylinder service?
A suitable unvented-cylinder-only service is £94.99 including VAT. An unvented-cylinder service completed alongside a suitable standard boiler service is £159.99 including VAT. Prices are correct as at 16 September 2026.
Do you repair cylinders installed by another company?
Yes. Suitable systems installed by other companies can be assessed, subject to condition, access, model identification, parts and engineer availability.
How often should an unvented cylinder be serviced?
Follow the cylinder manufacturer’s recommendations. Regular servicing is important because an unvented cylinder includes safety and pressure-control components.
Can you service the cylinder with the boiler?
Yes. A suitable unvented cylinder and standard boiler can be serviced during the same arranged appointment for £159.99 including VAT.
Do you work with heat-pump and solar cylinders?
Yes. Suitable cylinder systems connected to heat pumps or solar thermal installations can be considered. The cylinder, coils, controls and complete system must be assessed.
Which cylinder brands do you work with?
Bumfords considers all leading cylinder brands. Servicing and repairs remain subject to the model, condition, manufacturer information and parts availability.
Do you work in commercial properties?
Yes. Domestic, landlord and suitable smaller commercial cylinder requirements are considered. Send the property, equipment and hot-water-demand details before booking.
