Electric boiler installation across South Yorkshire

An electric boiler chosen for the property—not simply the absence of gas

Bumfords assesses and installs suitable electric wet-central-heating boilers for homes and selected commercial requirements. Heat loss, hot-water demand, electrical capacity, controls and likely running costs are considered before a system is recommended.

Electric does not automatically mean simple—or inexpensive to run

An electric boiler heats water for a wet central-heating system without burning gas, oil or LPG. It can therefore serve radiators and, where correctly designed, water-based underfloor heating without requiring a flue or fuel tank.

That can be useful in flats, smaller properties, well-insulated buildings and locations without a practical combustion-fuel option. However, electricity usually costs more per unit of useful heat than mains gas. A convenient installation does not by itself make an electric boiler the best long-term choice.

We start with the building and how it will be used. Boiler output, electrical supply, heat loss, cylinder requirements, peak hot-water demand and controls all need to work together.

Where it may—and may not—fit

A balanced electric-boiler assessment

Potentially suitable

Smaller or well-insulated properties, buildings without mains gas, situations where a flue or fuel store is impractical, and selected supplementary or specialist systems.

Needs careful checking

Larger homes, high heat losses, several bathrooms, prolonged daily heating demand or properties where the existing electrical supply may not support the required boiler output.

Alternatives considered

A gas boiler, oil or LPG system, heat pump or a wider fabric-and-heating upgrade may prove more practical. We would rather explain that than specify the wrong appliance.

Important: an electric boiler is not the same as a heat pump. Both use electricity, but they produce heat differently and can have very different electrical, installation and running-cost implications.

The boiler is one part of the system. Emitters, controls, pipework and hot-water arrangements also affect the result.

The electrical supply matters

Available capacity must be confirmed before quotation

Electric boilers can require a substantial dedicated electrical supply. The suitable output cannot be decided from the number of bedrooms alone, and the presence of a modern consumer unit does not confirm that the property has enough available capacity.

The incoming supply, other major electrical loads and the manufacturer’s installation requirements must be considered. Depending on the proposed system, assessment or work by an appropriately qualified electrical contractor may be required.

  • Calculated building heat loss
  • Required boiler output
  • Incoming electrical supply and available capacity
  • Dedicated circuit and protection requirements
  • Other large loads such as showers, EV charging or cooking
  • Manufacturer instructions and commissioning requirements

How an electric-boiler project progresses

01 — DETAILS

Understand the property

We gather information about the building, current system, heating emitters, hot-water demand and reason for changing.

02 — ASSESS

Check suitability

Heat loss, boiler output, electricity supply, controls, cylinder arrangements and alternatives are considered.

03 — SPECIFY

Agree the solution

The proposed appliance and connected work are explained, including any necessary electrical or system alterations.

04 — INSTALL

Fit and hand over

The agreed system is installed and commissioned, with controls and appropriate ongoing care explained.

Electric boiler questions to consider

ConsiderationWhat it means
Installation locationNo combustion flue is required, which may open up locations that are unsuitable for a gas, oil or LPG boiler.
Fuel storageNo oil or LPG tank is needed, but the property must have sufficient electrical capacity.
Running costPurchase price and ease of installation should not be considered in isolation. Expected annual heat and hot-water use matters.
Hot waterHigher or simultaneous hot-water demand may require a correctly sized cylinder and appropriate controls rather than an assumed combi arrangement.
Existing systemRadiators, wet underfloor heating, pipework, pumps, valves and controls must be compatible with the design.
MaintenanceThere is no combustion servicing, but the boiler and wider wet system still need appropriate inspection, care and fault diagnosis.

Send the property postcode and initial system information before arranging a visit. This helps us establish whether an electric boiler is a realistic route and what further assessment is needed.

Electric boiler questions

Frequently asked questions

Is an electric boiler suitable for any property?

No. Suitability depends on calculated heat loss, hot-water demand, property size, operating pattern and available electrical capacity. Larger or poorly insulated properties can require an impractical electrical load or have high running costs.

Is an electric boiler cheaper to run than gas?

Not usually on a straightforward unit-cost comparison. Actual cost depends on the property, tariff, heat demand, controls and use. We recommend considering likely running costs as well as installation cost.

Can an electric boiler work with existing radiators?

It may be possible, but the radiators, pipework, controls, flow requirements and building heat loss must be assessed as a complete system.

Can an electric boiler supply hot water?

Yes, appropriate systems can heat domestic hot water, commonly through a suitable cylinder. The correct arrangement depends on the number of occupants, bathrooms and peak hot-water demand.

Does an electric boiler need a flue?

No combustion takes place, so an electric boiler does not require a combustion flue. It does still need suitable pipework, controls, electrical provision and safe access.

Is an electric boiler the same as electric underfloor heating?

No. An electric boiler heats water for a wet heating system. Bumfords works with wet, water-based underfloor heating and does not install or repair electric underfloor-heating mats or cables.

Do electric boilers require servicing?

They do not need combustion checks in the same way as a gas or oil boiler, but the appliance and connected wet-heating system still require appropriate inspection and maintenance in line with manufacturer guidance.
